Donnie Ray Cornwell, age 70, of Greenup, IL passed away at 5:25 pm Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am Thursday January 13, 2022, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Greenup, IL. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday evening at the church. Burial with Military rites by Cumberland County Veterans will be in the Greenup Cemetery. The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, IL is assisting the family.

Donnie was born in Effingham, IL on March 12, 1951, to Ted Cornwell and Alice Sipus. He married the love of his life Melodie Carver on September 2, 1972.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years; daughters Tiffany (Jeff) Thompson and Tanya (Chris) Daugherty; three grandchildren Madison “Maddy Cakes” Thompson, Trevor “Trevinator” Thompson and Gage “Luhu” Daugherty; brother Greg (Ellen) Cornwell; sisters Joy Streeter, Charlotte (Bill) Leher and Cheryl Staples; his best friend George Hensley, Alan Hickox and special fur baby Marley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and fur baby Barklee.

Donnie had worked as a deputy for Cumberland Co. Sheriff Luke Holsapple. Then for twenty plus years he worked at OCE Bruning later known as Arkwright Inc. where he was Bob Strodes' right arm. He and Melodie owned and operated the D & M Hardware Store in Greenup from 1995 to 2008. He then went into the trucking business until retirement. “He loved his big red Pete”. Donnie was a Cumberland County deputy coroner for his buddy Scotty Stults. He served on the Greenup Village Board and was a volunteer firefighter for many years. Donnie served in the Army National Guard for 25 years retiring as a First Sergeant. He was a loving husband, father, and Papa. He was always willing and loved doing honey do projects for Melodie.
