Leroy Clemens Wernsing, 79, of Teutopolis, passed away peacefully at home Tuesday morning, October 12, 2021.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 15, 2021 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis with burial in St. Francis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the National Ataxia Foundation or the American Legion.
Leroy was born on July 16, 1942 in Effingham County, the son of Leo and Lillian Wernsing. He grew up in Teutopolis and graduated from Teutopolis High School with the class of 1960. He enlisted in the National Guard and served for 6 years. He married Barbara Ann Gertrude Kinkelaar on August 6, 1966. She preceded him in death on February 16, 1990. He then married Liz Maculevics Dalton on April 8, 1994.
Leroy worked as a truck driver for many years at Siemers, Bulkmatic, and was especially proud of his years spent at Conway Central Express. He enjoyed farming, woodworking, collecting antique tractors, camping, and traveling with friends and family.
Leroy is survived by his wife, Liz, of Teutopolis; his sons, Keith, Kenny, Kurt (wife, Amy), Karl, Kevin (wife, Dana), Kris (wife, Amanda) of Teutopolis; his daughter Kathy (husband, Richard) Verdeyen of Effingham; step-daughters, Dana Bertetto of Hillsboro, and Andrea (husband, Darrin) Strauch of St. Elmo; grandchildren, Zachery and Jonathan Verdeyen, Ana and Leo Wernsing, Lauren, Briana, and Ivan Wernsing, Lilli, Ava, and Gage Wernsing, Baylee Bertetto, Hunter and Josie Strauch; sisters, Norma Berberich of Mt. Carmel, Betty Schaufler of Teutopolis, and several nieces and nephews.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Barbara, daughter, Kimberly, and sister Elvira Will.
