Charles R. McCain, 86, of Altamont, died at 12:52 a.m. Thursday, September 23, 2021 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont with Rev. Dr. James Wright officiating. Burial will follow at Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, September 27, 2021. Memorials may be made to ALIS or the donor’s choice.

CDC and IDPH guidelines with regard to COVID-19 must be followed. This includes, but is not limited to, face covering and social distancing.

Charles was born on Saturday, March 23, 1935 to Roy and Alta (Fenton) McCain in Jackson Township, rural Altamont. He married Lori Seales on November 16, 1983. After Charlie graduated from ACHS, he had a try-out for the St. Louis Cardinals and played baseball while in the US Army. He served on the Unit 10 school board. Along with farming, Charlie trained standardbred race horses. He was an avid Cardinal fan and was an expert at hunting mushrooms and ginseng. He loved walking in the woods and sitting on his porch watching the neighbors and the world go by. 

In addition to his wife of over thirty-seven years, Charles is survived by; his sons; Rodney McCain, Altamont and Steve (Kim) McCain, Altamont; daughters, Shelby (Adam) Robertson, Altamont, Lisa Tipsword, Beecher, IL, Renee (Jamie) Beccue, Altamont and Brandi (Matt) Wilson, Mason; brother, Louis (Evie) McCain, Normal; nine grandchildren, Shae McCain, Springfield, Teri (John Jones) Sapp, Effingham, Richard (Bethany) Finn, Beecher, IL, Nichole (Konnor) White, Jacksonville, NC, Eryka Ragan, Mason, Brock Beccue, Altamont and Weston, Aubree and Ella Robertson, Altamont; four great grandchildren; in-laws, April Stuemke, Bart and Julie Seales, Penny and Jerry White, Dean and Lesa Seales, Emilie and Monte Wall; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by; his parents; son, Roy Douglas McCain; brothers, John (Mabel), Kenneth (Lila) and Robert (Reta) McCain; son-in-law, David Tipsword; brothers-in-law, Clint Merkel and Curly Stuemke; sister-in-law, Beverly McCain; grandchildren, Glenn Johnson and Shane Finn.
