John Charles “Johnnie” McClain, 95, of Shelbyville, Illinois, formerly of Toledo, was called home to his Heavenly Father on Sunday, September 12, 2021.

Funeral services will be Wednesday September 15, 2021 at 3:00 pm at the Toledo Christian Church, with Jason Palmer officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 3:00 pm at the Toledo Christian Church. Burial with Military Rites by Cumberland County Veterans will be in the Toledo Cemetery. The Barkley Funeral Chapel in Toledo is assisting the family with arrangements.

John was born on February 1, 1926, in Spring Point Township, Cumberland County, the son of Henry and Stella (Oakley) McClain.

John served in the Army from 1952-1954. He worked at Cumberland Unit 77 School for 20 years, retired from Pyroferric after 35 years, and loyally served the food pantry at the First United Methodist Church in Shelbyville for the last 7 years of his life. He enjoyed watching Fighting Illini Basketball. John was a man of his word and would give the shirt off his back. Although he did not have any biological children, he raised a family and included them as his own.

John is survived by his daughter, Brenda Talley; grandchildren, Keith Myers, Jodi (Just’n) Harmala, and Jaclyn (Brad) Getz; six great grandchildren; sisters, Lelah Kroenlein and Marilyn Ray.

John was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings.

Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church 205 W. Main Shelbyville, Illinois.
