James Calvin Marshall, 73, of Effingham, passed away unexpectedly at 10:59 a.m. on Sunday, September 5, 2021 at HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital.

J.C. was born July 14, 1948 in Effingham, the son of Thomas Calvin and Lora Rose (Holding) Marshall. He graduated from Effingham High School with the Class of 1966. J.C. married Beverly Elaine Daniels on May 14, 1973 at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham, where he was a lifelong member.

J.C. had an entrepreneurial spirit, and was self-employed for the majority of his life. He was community minded, spending over 25 years coaching Effingham County’s youth in baseball, basketball, flag football, and soccer. J.C. was instrumental in starting the soccer program at the YMCA. For over 20 years, he was in charge of the transportation and delivery of the local Christmas dinners for the Ministerial Association.

J.C.’s other passion was music, teaching lessons and playing in many bands over the decades, notably The Trifaris and The Gaping Huggers in the 60’s and 70’s, and most recently Bakin’ Fat and Orbit 3.0. He was still writing and composing music until the very end of his life under the pseudonym, Dr. Remedy. J.C. lived big, and for those who knew him best, his life was almost unbelievable. Though his interests and passions were eclectic and many, he was simply happiest and proudest of his sons and grandchildren. J.C. loved coaching, teaching, playing music, and being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his father-in-law, Earl Daniels.

J.C. is survived by his wife, Bev Marshall of Effingham; sons, Levi (wife, Rachel) Marshall of Chester, IL, J.W. (wife, Christina) Marshall of Dallas, TX, and Richard (wife, Whitney) Marshall of Waxahachie, TX; grandchildren, Calvin Roy, Elsie Rose, Blair Elizabeth, James Chester, William Thomas, Magnolia Lee, and one on the way; his mother-in-law, Elaine Daniels of Pana, IL; and sister-in-law, Rita (husband, Mike) Clapsaddle, and their family.

Memorial contributions are suggested to UNICEF USA. J.C. supported their work and would have appreciated everyone joining him here: https://www.unicefusa.org/.

The family has entrusted Shafer-Perfetti & Assalley Funeral Home in Taylorville with arrangements.
