Lani Britton, 64, of Effingham, died at 10:12 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital, Springfield.
There will be no services. Memorials may be made to the funeral home to assist with expenses. A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Lani DeLong Avery was born on Sunday, December 9, 1956 in Van Nuys, California to William Charles and Lois Ellen (DeLong) Avery. Her father was an Engineer and was involved in installing some of the first air conditioners and owned his own business in Bangkok, Thailand. Early on, she had a love of travel. Lani had a degree in journalism from the University of California and while living in Hawaii she published her own newsletter about the islands of Hawaii. She was an avid sailor and at one time had her own sailboat name, Calmente, which means calming and soothing. One of her greatest joys was her animals and she loved Dobermans. She married Donald Wayne Britton on October 7, 2016 in Effingham. In addition to her journalism work, she had been a realtor.
She is survived by her husband Donnie of Effingham; stepdaughter, Chelsey Britton of Bedford, IN; sisters, Margi Avery of Boise, ID, Jackie Chandler of California and Wylie Mertz; sisters-in-law, Carla Budde and her husband Kenneth of Tallapoosa, GA, Susan Manning of St. Elmo and Nedra Amys and her husband Rick of Poplar, WI; brother-in-law, Ronnie Britton and his wife Ruth of Tallapoosa, GA.
Lani was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Scott Avery.
