Merle E. Underwood, 86 of Cincinnati, OH formerly of St. James passed away at 9:20 PM Friday, March 29, 2013 at his home.

Funeral service is 1 PM Friday, April 5, 2013 at C & A Pagel Funeral Home, St. Elmo. Burial, with military rites by St. Elmo American Legion, will follow in Lovett cemetery rural St. Elmo. Visitation will be 6-9 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are requested to the Underwood family.

Merle was born on December 4, 1926 in Fayette Co., IL the son of John and Margaret (Miller) Underwood. He married Mary L. Logue on July 24, 1957 at St. Elmo and she preceded him in death on August 7, 1999.

He was a retired from the former Fedders Corp., Effingham and enjoyed genealogy, hunting, and fishing. Merle was a US Army Veteran of WW II.

Surviving are his children; Marie (Gene) Dye of Altamont, Gene Underwood of Tyler, TX, John Underwood of Springfield, Marilyn Underwood of Cincinnati, Carl “Taco” (Linda) Underwood of Beecher City, Gary (Sheila) Underwood of St. Elmo, and Mary (Greg) Devall of Effingham, 8 grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded by his parents, 3 siblings; Dorwin John Underwood and Norma Jean Underwood both in infancy and Earl Wayne Underwood.
