John W. Finfrock, 85, of Altamont, died at 7:53 a.m. on Monday, March 1, 2021, at Kindred Hospital, Peoria.

A public graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Arborcrest Memorial Park, Effingham with Pastor Van Brooks officiating. Memorials may be made to Asbury College or the Donor’s Choice. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.

COVID-19 protocol including but not limited to face covering and social distancing will be required.

John William Finfrock was born on Friday, July 5, 1935 in rural Altamont to Louis G. and Emma A. (Buchholz) Finfrock. He married Marcia Ellen Rhoads on June 6, 1965 in Oakland, IL at the Oakland United Methodist Church and she preceded him in death on August 22, 2011. He was a retired public-school educator having taught primarily in the Oakland and St. Elmo, IL school districts and was a retired farmer. John was a member at Funkhouser United Methodist Church. He graduated from Asbury College and then received his master’s degree at Eastern Illinois University and enjoyed keeping up with former classmates from college as well as former students from his teaching days. John served his country in the National Guard.

He is survived by; his son, John D. Finfrock, Effingham; daughter, Debbie (Jason) Bower, Newton; sisters, Mary Ann (Gerald) Young, Altamont and Allegra Ellis, Altamont; sister-in-law, Marsha Finfrock, Altamont; and 3 grandchildren, Ian, Alec and Elena Bower.

In addition to his wife; he was preceded in death by; his parents; brother, Benson Finfrock; sisters, Sarah (James) Warren, Luella (Harland) Hooks and Jane (Danny) Pugsley; and brother-in-law, David Ellis.
