Gary Lee Brooks,78, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Gary was born on May 31, 1942, in Rose Hill, IL, the son of Royal and Eva (Cunefare) Brooks. He married Alita Ash on June 9, 1963 in Newton, IL. In his early years, Gary taught and coached basketball at Edgewood Grade School. Later on he co-owned a wiring assembly plant in Newton, IL. Before finally retiring, Gary returned to teaching as a substitute teacher. He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry and was known for building the sets for the Newton High School musicals. Gary also enjoyed fishing and shooting clay pigeons. He was a member of the Effingham Masonic Lodge #149.
Gary is survived by his wife, Alita Brooks of Effingham; daughters, Aundrea (Craig Seiler) Brooks of Newton and Carrie (Dean) Hite of Windsor; and grandchildren, Riley Hite and Rory Hite.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Gail Lynn James.
