Lorraine A. Mercier, 92 years old, of Altamont, Illinois passed away into her heavenly home at 10:45 PM Monday evening under “The Star of Bethlehem” surrounded by her family. She resided at Willowbrook of Effingham during the last year.

Visitation and Funeral services for the family and friends will be held at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church south of Altamont on Saturday afternoon, December 26, 2020.  Visitation will be from 2:00 until 4:00 after which the funeral service will commence officiated by Rev. Marcus Manley.

Christian Burial services will be held in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery, next to her husband, Omer E. Mercier, in rural Bethlehem community south of Altamont following the funeral service.

Lorraine was born on August 19, 1928 in the Bethlehem community at the family farm, one of four girls into the Christian family of Gustav and Ella (Voelker) Muchow.  On September 10, 1950, she married Omer Edward George Mercier in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church by the Rev. E.G. Riedel.

Lorraine was raised on the family farm south of Altamont and attended the Bethlehem Lutheran School, a one-room school, for 8 years.

Lorraine was a loving wife, mother sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Besides raising a family with Omer and working on the family dairy farm, she most enjoyed her gardening of vegetables and flowers.

Lorraine was baptized on August 26, 1928 and later confirmed by her faith on Palm Sunday April 12, 1942 by Rev. P.M. Naumann in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she was a faithful and lifelong member.

Lorraine is survived by two sons, Michael Dean Mercier and Bob Mercier, both of Altamont: two daughters, Judith Michelle (husband Ron) Koester of Altamont and Jane Adele Mercier, Salem, Illinois.

She is survived by her grandchildren Michael (wife Andrea) Mercier, Chillicothe, Illinois; Michelle (husband Mike) Miller; Jason (wife Sherena) Koester; Angela (husband Jacob) Shewmake all of Altamont, Illinois; Autumn McConaughay, Granite City, IL; Alaina (husband Angel), Tilden, IL and Adria McConaughay, Highland, IL

She is survived by her great-grandchildren Gabriel Mercier; Kayla and Kara Miller; Kingston and Kysson Koester; Drew and Everly Shewmake; Amani and Amira Osorio. She is survived by one sister, Edna Kimball, Denver, Colorado.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, Gustav and Ella; husband, Omer; two sisters, Paula Muchow and Wilma Wolf and husband George; granddaughter, Kimberly Mercier.

Memorials may be made to the Bethlehem Church Choir, the Stained-Glass Window Fund or the Donor’s choice.
