Emmit Dale Poynter, 96, of Dieterich, IL, died peacefully in his sleep at his home of natural causes on Sunday, October 4, 2020.

Private family funeral services will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Burial will be in Watson Cemetery in Watson, IL with military rites.

Emmit was born on February 7, 1924 to parents James Madison and Alma Nell (Woody) Poynter. He married Lelia Marie Richars on March 17, 1945 and she preceded him in death on August 17, 2006. They were parents of 3 daughters, Rebecca Jane “Becky” (James) Bailey, Martha Lee “Marty” (Butch) Bahrns and Rhonda Jean (Cleo) McManaway. They had four grandchildren: Aaron (Mindie) McManaway, Devin (Kari) McManaway, Kiley (Adam) Bohnhoff, and Craig (Ashley) Bailey. They also had 11 great-grandchildren. Emmit was a member of the Watson United Methodist Church.

Emmit served in the U. S. Army from November of 1944 to July of 1946 during World War II and was stationed in Germany. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW. After the service, he worked at Norge of Effingham, which eventually became Fedders for many years. After retirement, he worked for Martin’s IGA delivering flowers and groceries for over 20 years. He farmed his entire life and continued to give his expert advice until his last days. He enjoyed his side by side rides around the farm and countryside. He will be greatly missed by all, especially his family and his close neighbors, the Klinglers.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his sister Wanda Garbe and his brother James Morris Poynter.
