Joseph J. “Joe” Mathewson, 55, of Beecher City, IL, went home to be with our Lord and Savior after a courageous fight with Glioblastoma (Brain cancer) at 8:20 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham, IL. Burial will be in Watson Cemetery in Watson, IL. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Joe Mathewson Memorial c/o St. Mary’s Church, 140 Auto Street, Clintonville, WI 54929. Joseph was born on June 8, 1965, the son of Robert and Florence (Bricco) Mathewson of De Pere, WI. Joseph married Carolyn (Neal) Mathewson on June 23, 2001 in Green Bay, WI. Joe was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham and the Knights of Columbus Council 665. Joseph worked for 17 years at Joint Active systems (JAS) in Effingham. Joe loved going to work every day. He truly loved his job and all of his Bonutti work family. Joe loved hunting and just being outdoors. His grandchildren lit up his world with joy, watching them laugh and play this last year gave him so much joy. Spending time with his wife Carolyn and all his children made every day a great day for him.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Mathewson of Beecher City; son, Brandon Mathewson (Megan) of Green Bay, WI; daughter, Quincy Edwards (Zachary); step-daughter, Charity Rock (Rob) of Ankeny, IA; step-son, Zachary Lowry (Cassidy) of Altamont; five grandchildren, Sophia Edwards, Nate Rock, Abigail Lowry, Julia Lowry and Braydon Mathewson; sisters, Holly Bergner (Bruce), Lynn Heezen (Paul), and Mary Toellner (Randy) all of De Pere, WI; and brother, Scott Mathewson (Pam) of De Pere, WI.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence (Bricco) Mathewson in 2002, his dad, Robert Mathewson in 2007; and step-son, Derek Lowry in 2007.
