Oscar Leon Thomas, 81, of rural Stewardson, IL passed away at 9:31 p.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2020 in his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 12 in Strasburg United Methodist Church with Rev. David Ducommon and Pastor Steve Harder officiating. Visitation will be from noon – 2:00 p.m. Sunday in the church. Burial will be in Grace Cemetery, Strasburg, IL. Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Strasburg is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to Strasburg United Methodist Church.

Oscar was born January 24, 1938 in rural Strasburg, IL, the son of Harry Estas and Bessie Maye Gill Thomas. He graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in the Class of 1956. Oscar was a tool maker for Blaw-Knox in Mattoon, IL until his retirement. He was a member of the Strasburg United Methodist Church and the Bluetick Coonhound Association. Oscar was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed coon hunting, raising show dogs, riding his horses and tending to his garden. Oscar will be remembered as a hardworking man with great sense of humor. He married Phyllis Childress on February 18, 1984 in Strasburg, IL.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughters, Candie Kessler of Stewardson, IL, Robin Shumard (Roger) of Stewardson, IL, Annie Friese of Stewardson, IL, Jamie Thomas of Tuscola, IL, and Janis Thomas of Mattoon, IL; sons, Jodie Thomas of Savannah, GA and Steve Schmidt of Stewardson, IL: 18 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; nine siblings, Paul, Agnes, Irvin, Gaylord, William, Donald, Alice, Bertha and Omer “Bub”; and one grandchild.
