Sara Jane Meyer, age 80, of Dieterich, Illinois, passed away at 8:55 PM – Thursday, October 31, 2019, at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham, Illinois. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM – November 5, 2019, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Bishop Creek, Illinois (rural Dieterich) with Fr. Frank Folino celebrating mass.  Burial will be in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Dieterich, Illinois.  Visitation will be held 4:00-7:00 PM – Monday, November 4, 2019, at the Meyer Funeral Home in Dieterich, Illinois.  In loving memory of Sara, memorials may be made to the Sara Meyer family to be used for a memorial of their choice.  The obituary can be viewed and condolences left by clicking here.

Sara was born on July 5, 1939, in Teutopolis, Illinois, the daughter of Louis F. and S. Lucille (James) Hodebecke.  She married Eldon Max Meyer on September 7, 1957, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis, Illinois, and he preceded her in death on October 7, 2017.

Sara and Max Meyer owned and operated the Meyer Grocery Store in Dieterich, for many years.  She was a member of the St. Isidore the Farm Parish and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Dieterich American Legion Post #628.

Sara enjoyed doing puzzles and watching NASCAR and other sporting events.  She was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears and NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon.

Sara is survived by: Children - Dennis (Roberta) Meyer of Effingham, Illinois; Terri (Doug) Funneman of Teutopolis, Illinois; Shari (Mark) Goldstein of Effingham, Illinois; and Louis “Jake” (Diane) Meyer of Jacksonville, Illinois. Grandchildren - Michelle Meyer, Laura (Justin) Sewell, Bobby, Claire, Matt, and Sean Meyer, Trisha Funneman, Mandy (Russ) Bloemer, Jessi (Jarrod) Tegeler, and Jay Funneman; Christine, Nick, Tom, and Ashley Goldstein, Travis Griffin, Christina (George) Lomelino, and Hannah, Hailey, and Garrett Meyer. Great-Grandchildren - Jasmine, Christian, and Evan Meyer, Alexis, Charlotte, and Kennedy Sewell, Kaleb Bannick, Cameron Kremer, Max, Alivia, Maci, and Bo Bloemer, Cooper and Brynn Tegeler, Evan Lomelino, Brock York, Mason Lomelino, Braydon Griffith and Brynlee Griffith. Sisters - Ruth Fouts of Springfield, Illinois; Marion Burford of Effingham Illinois; Gail Probst of Greenville, Indiana and Mary Totone of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Brother-in-law - John Meyer of Wheeler, Illinois. Sister-in-law - Inis (Joe) Probst of Wheeler, Illinois.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents; huband Max; sisters Joan Merz and Carol Barlage; brother-in-law Francis “Donnie” (Margaret) Meyer and sisters-in-law Phyllis Russell and Iris Meyer Johnson.
