Dorothy M. Buening, 69, of Mason, IL, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 21 at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, Effingham, IL 62401. Burial will be in Wright Cemetery in Mason, IL. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Dorothy was born on May 2, 1950, in Teutopolis, IL, the daughter of Norbert and Mary “Millie” (Schniederjan) Esker. She was united in marriage to George J. Buening on August 19, 1972 at St Francis of Assisi Church in Teutopolis.

Dorothy was a loving wife and a stay-at-home mother. She was a homeschool teacher as well as a homeschool group leader. She loved history, gardening, and cooking, but spending time with her family was most important. Dorothy was especially happy when surrounded by her grandchildren. She was a giving person and a hard worker who was always happy to help anyone who needed it. Dorothy was an active member and Sunday School teacher at New Hope Pentecostal Church in Flora, IL.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, George Buening of Mason; children, Christopher Buening of Mason, Michael (Jenny) Buening of Tolono, Jonathan (Aubrey) Buening of Homer, Ann Buening of Mason, David Buening of Watson, Joshua (Erin) Buening of Effingham, Caleb (Amanda) Buening of Charleston; 12 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; siblings, Carolyn Carmichael, Ron (Pam) Esker, Howard (Connie) Esker, Richard (Jeanette) Esker, JoEllen (Mick) Bretz, Paul (Emma) Esker, Cindy Murdock, Tony (Janet) Esker, and Fred (Kathy) Esker; and brother-in-law, Gerald “Smokie” Burford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son in infancy, William; sister, Barbara Burford; and grandson in infancy, Elijah Buening.
