Sherman Ray Peters, 78, of Cowden, IL passed away at 2:59 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2019 at Aperion Care in St. Elmo, IL.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden, IL with Pastor Antonio R. Sutton and Pastor Don “Satch” Thomas officiating. Burial will take place in Mound Cemetery, in rural Cowden, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 26, 2019 at Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Cowden, IL. Memorials may be made in Ray’s name to the United Methodist Church, 217 S 3 rd St., Cowden, IL 62422 or the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, KS 66675-8516.

Ray was born November 15, 1940, in Effingham, IL, the son of Sherman and Nadine (McDaniels) Peters. Ray served his country proudly for 22 years in the United States Army. He and Margaret Yarnell were united in holy matrimony on April 3, 1960 at the United Methodist Church in Cowden, IL. Ray owned and operated Peters Trucking in Cowden, IL and the Shell Stations in both Cowden, IL and Herrick, IL. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Cowden, IL and the V.F.W. Post 4829 of Shelbyville, IL.

Surviving are his lovely wife of 59 years, Margaret Peters of Cowden, IL; sons: John (Shelly) Peters of Cowden, IL and Larry (Lynn) Peters of Arlington, TX; three grandchildren: Erin and Victoria of Arlington, TX and John of Winchester, VA; brother, Paul (Wanda) Peters of Funkhouser, IL and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Shirley and Ruth Ann.
