Arlayne Elizabeth "Layne" Schafer, 88, of Shelbyville, IL passed away at 5:36 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at Hawthorne Inn Assisted Living in Shelbyville, IL.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10 in the Immaculate Conception Church in Shelbyville, IL with Father Marianna Sathuluri officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church, 1431 State Hwy 128, Shelbyville, IL 62565 or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Greater St. Louis, 1807 Park 270 DR Suite 110, St. Louis, MO 63146. Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville, IL is assisting the family.

Layne was born September 4, 1930, in Freeburg, MO, the daughter of Alois and Elsie Tillman Koerber. She married Frank J. Schafer on September 9,1950 in St. Louis, MO and he preceded her in death on May 26, 2015.

Layne was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She was formerly employed, for many years, at Farm Services and retired from First Trust Bank. She was a loving wife and mother and enjoyed spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are her son, Louis Schafer, wife Marie of Lakeland, TN; daughters: Mary Lockart, husband Bill of Shelbyville, IL, Karyn Rezinas, husband Perry of Mt. Zion, IL and Cindy McIlwain, husband Bill of Windsor; IL; grandchildren: Kay Beard of Nashville, TN, Kim Trout (Chris) of Petersburg, VA, Brad Lockart (Aimee) of Lakewood, IL, Brett Lockart (Mary) of Shelbyville, IL, Bart Lockart (Ashley) of Shelbyville, IL, Kara Saad (Ben) of Delaware, OH, Courtney Droogan (Sean) of Wilmette, IL, Kristin Weinberg (Michael) of Milford, OH, Jacob McIlwain, (Allison) of Findlay, IL and Jared McIlwain of Windsor, IL; great-grandchildren: Ally Beard, Sidney and Nick Trout, Carson, Crew, Jackson, Adeline, Elena, Theodore, Sawyer, Sloane and Abram Lockart, Kellen and Brennen Saad, Conner and Charlie Droogan; sister, Juanita Spiess (Joseph) of Lake Sherwood, MO; brother- in- law, Tom Buehrig of St.Charles, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; sisters: LaVern Horn and Patricia Buehrig and infant granddaughter, Elizabeth McIlwain.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Hawthorne Inn for the love and compassion shown to Layne during her five year stay and also to Quad County Hospice for their wonderful care.
