Alfred Paul “Al” Rohr, age 92, of Olney, Illinois, passed away 3:50 PM - Thursday, August 1, 2019, at Carle Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney, Illinois.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM – Thursday, August 8 at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Newton, Illinois. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ste. Marie, Illinois, with full military rites. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM –Wednesday at the church. In loving memory of Al, memorials may be made to the Newton Rotary Club scholarship fund. Alfred Paul better known as “Al” was born on October 13, 1926, in Jasper County, Illinois, the son of Julius and Veronica (Ochs) Rohr.

Al joined the United States Navy during World War II at the age of 17, and served on two different ships; one being the USS General SD Sturgis, a transport ship.  He was fortunate to witness the Japanese surrender at Tokyo Bay after his ship transported dignitaries to the event.

After the war, Al worked in various positions at different auto dealerships. In 1955, Al married Carol James in Newton, Illinois. He purchased his own dealership in Newton in 1961, which became Al Rohr Chevrolet, Olds and Buick. He was active in many organizations in Jasper County and Newton area. He was a 55-year member of the Newton Rotary Club where he enjoyed the fellowship of the club and especially cooking pork burgers before the Newton Eagles football games.

Anyone who was acquainted with Al knew his passion for hunting. He hunted elk in Montana and Utah, pheasants in the Dakotas, but his favorite place to hunt was in Cabool, Missouri at the farm of his longtime friend Bill Honeycutt.

Al is survived by his children: Bruce Rohr of Effingham, Illinois; Laurence and wife Bambi Rohr of Springfield, Illinois; Michael Rohr of Newton, Illinois; Elizabeth and husband Dean Swingler of Newton, Illinois; David and wife Teresa Rohr of Olney; Illinois; mother of his children, Carol Rohr of Newton, Illinois; daughter-in-law Karen Rohr of Torrey, Utah; grandchildren: Justin and wife Renee Swingler of Robinson, Illinois; Nathaniel Rohr of Springfield, Illinois; Morgan Swingler of Newton Illinois and Olivia Rohr of Springfield, Illinois.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, his son Linton, siblings: Loretta Fitzgerald, Mildred Burnell, Vincent “Vince” Rohr, Camilla Hemrich, Wilfred “Dick” Rohr, Ethene “Deanie” Brittenham and Gerald “Joe” Rohr.
