Sylvia Lucille (Diel) Moore, age 98, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 2:20 PM Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at Newton Care Center in Newton, Illinois.

Funeral services celebrating Sylvia’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, May 24 at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois, with Pastor Amy Jeffries officiating. Burial will be in the Mound (Cowden) Cemetery in Cowden, Illinois. Visitation will be held 1 hour before the service. Sylvia was born on December 4, 1920, in Noble, Illinois, the daughter of James B. and Grace (Newlin) Diel. She married Eugene J. Moore on August 26, 1946, in Olney, Illinois. Sylvia retired from Decatur School District, where she taught math at MacArthur High School. She also taught in Macon and Strasburg, Illinois.

Sylvia was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the Jasper County retired teacher association. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and doing Sudoku puzzles.

Sylvia is survived by Husband of 72 years – Eugene Moore of Newton, Illinois; Children – Janice (Daniel) Witt of Newton, Illinois; Ronald E. (Shirley) Moore of Poplar Bluff, Missouri and Richard D. (Kendy) Moore of Oswego, Illinois; Grandchildren – Trevor Moore, Mallory Moore and Trent Moore; Great Grandchildren – Emily Moore and Graham Moore; Sisters – Gladys Fitzpatrick of Dousman, Wisconsin, Audra Shan of Olney, Illinois and Marilyn Bear of Paris, Illinois.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Jennifer Witt, sisters Esther Wells, Mary Margaret Knakmuhs and Nellie Ambers and a brother Joseph Diel.
