Bertha Mary (Meyer) Dust, 86, of Effingham, IL, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2019.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 16 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Green Creek with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday with a 6:00 p.m. parish rosary and wake service at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities or St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Bertha was born on December 27, 1932 in Effingham, IL, the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret (Hoelscher) Meyer. She married Ambrose F. Dust on October 23, 1951 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. He preceded her in death in 2004. Bertha was the proud mother of 12 children and a dedicated farm wife and homemaker. She and Ambrose loved dancing, from square dancing to ballroom dancing. She was an exceptional pie maker and bread baker. Bertha made hundreds of beautiful quilts and afghans for her family. She was an avid card player and was a member of several card clubs. She was a long-standing member of the St. Mary’s Help of Christians Ladies Sodality and Catholic Daughters of America. She loved volunteering weekly at Catholic Charities Second Hand Rose. She taught her children the simple pleasures of gardening and canning. She loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by 11 children, Mary Jane (Dave) Klitzing of Altamont, Karen (Larry) Mietzner of Effingham, Steve (Sherri) Dust of Green Creek, Kathy Dust (daughter-in-law) of Green Creek, Tom (Elaine) Dust of Green Creek, Daniel (Ruth) Dust of Bishop, Rose (Steve) Kopplin of Altamont, JoEllen (Jeff) Armstrong of Altamont, Laura (Chris) Deters of Teutopolis, Beth (Matt) Koester of Jewett, Lisa (Wally) Thompson of Effingham, and Christina (Mark) Probst of Teutopolis. She is also survived by 40 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren (and 2 expectant), 3 step-grandchildren and 1 step-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ambrose Dust, son James Dust, parents, and siblings Henry Meyer, JoAnn Warren and Joseph Meyer Jr.
