Violet D. Roberts, 85, of Champaign, Illinois, formerly of Effingham passed away Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 1:50 p.m. at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 24 at St. John Lutheran Church, 509 S. Mattis, Champaign. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign.

Violet was born September 10, 1927 in rural Effingham County, the daughter of Albert and Louis (Traub) Mellendorf. She married Hobert Roberts May 29, 1964 at St. John Lutheran Church in Champaign. She was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Company in Effingham then transferred to Champaign. She retired in 1982 after 35 1/2 years. She enjoyed counted cross stitch, traveling with her husband and taking photographs. She and her husband enjoyed many winters in Florida. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Champaign

Survivors are step-son, Hobert D. "Butch" Roberts of Monticello; step-daughter, Linda (husband Craig) Burgess of Junction City, Ore.; six step-grandchildren; 12 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-granddaughter and two step-great-great-grandchildren; sister, Jeri (husband Delbert) Mundt of Dieterich; brother, Leroy (wife Natalie) Mellendorf of Effingham and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband August 27, 2009; brothers, Eugene, Harlan and Ardon; sister, Alberta Garbe and two nephews.
