He enlisted in the Navy for one year and was discharged when World War II came to an end. Art enrolled at the University of Illinois, Champaign, for the next four years, graduating with honors in 1950. While at the U of I he met Lois Nordstrom from Moline and they were married on August 20, 1950 in Moline, IL. Athletics were a favorite of Art, playing baseball, softball, and basketball up to the age of 50. Art also ran races till he was 60. Art enjoyed golf too having a hole-in-one.

Art leaves his wife of 68 years, Lois Strom of Effingham; daughter; Linda (Peter) Cirzan of South Elgin; sons, Steven Strom of Effingham and Mark Strom of Billings, MT; grandson, Adam Strom of Palatine; and granddaughters, Sarah Strom of San Francisco, CA and Molly Strom of Chicago.
