M. Joyce May age 81 of Newton passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at the Newton Care Center, Newton, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 28 at the Crain Funeral Home, Newton. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Friday in the funeral home. Burial will be in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Newton.

Joyce was born on February 26, 1937 in Rose Hill, Illinois the daughter of Loyed and Margaret (Gosnell) Huddleston. On April 1, 1956, Joyce married Don I. May. He survives. A registered nurse, Joyce began her career at Crawford Memorial Hospital. She later worked as a surgical nurse at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital and for Marshall Clinic in Effingham until her retirement.

Joyce was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the chancel choir and the American Nursing Association. In years past, Joyce was a member of the Home Extension and served as 4-H leader of the Dizzy Daisy’s. During their time in Florida, Joyce took part in the activities of the Red-Hat Society and modeled in the style shows for the ladies group.

In her free time, Joyce enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening and canning. She liked to read and take walks. Joyce was a wonderful pie and cake baker. For family birthdays, she would make each one a special, decorated cake. Joyce enjoyed her time with her family, following grandkids’ activities and attending the horse races with Don.

Joyce will be loved and remembered by her husband of sixty-two years Don I. May of Newton; children Dane (Renee) May of Newton, Dorette (Gery) Ochs of Newton and Dina May and Darrell Cartright of Xenia; eight grandchildren Will, Ty, and Sydney May, Garrett Ochs, Sara Sholders, Michael Schoonover, Mason and Dalton Hungate; eleven great grandchildren; and sister-in-law Aline Huddleston of Mahomet.

Her parents brothers Jack Huddleston and Joe Huddleston and sister-in-law Patricia Huddleston preceded her in death.
