Ralph Charles McWhorter, Jr., 82, of Effingham, Illinois went to be with the Lord Monday, January 14, 2013 at his home.

A celebraton of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 18 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham with Rev. Theodore C. Gall officiating. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery in Effingham with military rites. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham. Condolences may be left online at www.hallfuneralchapel.com.

Ralph was born in Chicago, the son of Ralph and Marie (Kiefer) McWhorter, Sr. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Effingham, VFW Post #1769, American Legion Post #120 and the Disabled American Veterans in Effingham. Ralph was a U.S. Army veteran and served his country in Korea from May of 1951 until June of 1953. He married Patricia J. (Schwermine) January 24, 1986 in Kentucky and she survives.

Also surviving are three children, Russell Dean (wife Jean) and Michael Ray McWhorter of Effingham and Richard Charles (wife Sidney) McWhorter of Folkston, Ga.; three step-children,  Douglas (wife Judy) Van Matre of Dieterich, Barbara (husband Jim) Shelley of Effingham and Denise (husband Danny) Parks of Mason; eight grandchildren, four step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn Arnold of Effingham and Gloria Jean Shadwell of Freedom, Calif.; brothers, Cecil Carl McWhorter of Salem, Danny McWhorter of Greensboro, N.C. and David Ronald McWhorter of Oberstein, Germany

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; two step-grandchildren and one sister.
