Fern Hopkins (91) of Effingham

Fern Hopkins, 91, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Friday, September 28, 2018 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, IL.

Fern was born on September 30, 1926, in Salt Creek, IL, the daughter of Truman and Mae (Compton) West. She married George Oliver Hopkins on December 30, 1948. He preceded her in death on November 8, 1980. Also preceding her in death were her son, George O. Hopkins of Effingham, IL, her sister, Genny Wade, of Shelbyville, IL, and an infant sister, Fonna Mae.

Fern is survived by her sons, Larry (Karen) Hopkins of Paris, IL, and James and Roger Hopkins, both of Effingham, IL. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Erik (Tara) Hopkins of Paris, IL, and Kimberly (Joseph) Hile of Arab, AL; great-grandchildren, Troy and Drake Hopkins of Paris, IL, and Lakyn, Logan, and Lucas Hile of Arab, AL; her sister, Clover (Robert) Witt of Urbana, IL; and several nieces and nephews.

Fern dedicated herself to caring for countless others during her time employed at nursing homes in Effingham. She enjoyed sitting outside talking to friends and neighbors and caring for animals. Fern loved her family who will miss her greatly.
