Burl Johnson, age 76, of Newton, Illinois, passed away at 9:21 PM – Thursday, July 26, 2018, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham, Illinois.

Funeral services celebrating Burl’s life will be held at 11:00 AM – Thursday, August 2 at the Meyer Funeral Home in Newton, Illinois, with Rodney Houser officiating. Burial will be in the Trexler Cemetery in rural Newton, Illinois. Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 PM – Wednesday. Burl was born on January 29, 1942, in Jasper County, Illinois, the son of Neal Cass and Esther (Clagg) Johnson. He married Mary Housh on February 16, 1972, in Effingham, Illinois, and she survives. Burl worked at HW Clark and Stevens Industries for several years. He also worked as a carpenter. Burl enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his family. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Burl is survived by: Wife of 46 years – Mary Johnson of Newton, Illinois; Children – Brad (Angie) Johnson of Kinmundy, Illinois; Phillip Johnson of Farina, Illinois; Lisa Johnson of Farina, Illinois; Shane (Brenda) Housh of Plainfield, Illinois; Jarrett (Jeannie) Johnson of Newton, Illinois and Dana (Danny) Sparks of Newton, Illinois; Grandchildren – Amber (Braiden) Booher, Brock Johnson, Britt Johnson, Alicia Mitchell, Alana Mitchell, Christian Schreier, Shawna Schreier, Blake Johnson, Brooke Johnson and Jennifer Sparks; Great Grandchildren – Bailie Booher, Logan Johnson, Haley Simmons and Jalynn Mitchell   Sister – Geraldine (Owen “Scotty”) Clark of Newton, Illinois.

Burl was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Norma Clark, Beverly Sparks and Mary Marshall; brothers Gene, Donald and Dean Johnson.
