Verna Marie Purdy, 98, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Lavender Ridge in Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 14 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Effingham. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

Verna was born on October 31, 1919 in Wabash, IN, the daughter of Earl and Grace (McKinley) Curless. She was united in marriage to Loren A. Purdy in 1937. He preceded her in death on October 16, 1993. Verna was a homemaker who put her family first, never passing up an opportunity to rock a grandbaby or great-grandbaby to sleep. She was a sweet, caring lady who was never too busy to listen or help. Verna loved to create things of beauty and comfort. She enjoyed cooking, counted cross-stitch, sewing, crocheting, and ceramics. She also had a love for flowers.

Verna is survived by her sons, Ron Purdy of Orange, CA, and Fred (Sandra) Purdy of Olney; grandchildren, Tal (Amy) Braunecker, Darek (Shelley) Braunecker, Matthew (Elizabeth) Braunecker, Kortney (Bart) Willenborg, Scot Purdy, and Krissy (Todd) Rietz; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Loren; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda (Russell) Braunecker; daughter-in-law, Joyce Purdy; and 8 brothers and sisters.
