Wilma Sherrick, 96, of Effingham died Thursday, April 19, 2018 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.
Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 28 at First Christian Church of Effingham, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at church, officiated by Pastor David McConnell. Burial will follow at Greenup Cemetery in Greenup, Illinois. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham, Illinois.

Wilma was born on September 20, 1921 on a farm in rural Cumberland County, Illinois to Ray and Opal (Reed) Nichols. She married William Lowry “Bill” Sherrick on August 10, 1941. He preceded her in death in 1998, after 57 years of marriage.
Wilma began her teaching career in a one room school house in Jasper County, Illinois with a provisional certificate, and later graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a degree in Education. She was a teacher in Jasper County as well as Effingham Unit 40. After acquiring her Masters in Administration, she spent her last years in education as a principal at Watson and Central Grade Schools. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Effingham, Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star & Effingham Art Guild. She loved music and frequently played the organ or piano for church, Eastern Star and other events. She was well known for her china painting and enjoyed, knitting, sewing, writing, and painting on canvas.
Wilma is survived by one son, James R. (Sally) Sherrick of Watson, Illinois and two daughters, Nancy (David-deceased) Brosseau of Orland Park, Illinois and Jeanie (Mike) Harshbarger of Mount Vernon, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Kelly (John) Anderson, Becky Quandt (Jim Martin), Craig (Tyra) Brosseau, Jeff (Danielle) Brosseau, Jacob (Sara) Webb, Michael (Danielle) Harshbarger, and Sean (Kaylin) Harshbarger; seven great-grandchildren, Hannah (Ryan) Hoekstra, Elizabeth Anderson, Isabelle Brosseau, Bennet Brosseau, Alec Quandt, Jason Martin, Reese and Josie Harshbarger and Coraline Webb; and great-great-grandchildren, Nora and Noel Hoekstra.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William “Bill”; brother, Fred Nichols; and son-in-law, David Brosseau.
The family would like to thank the staff at Lakeland Rehabilitation & Health Care Center and HSHS Hospice Southern Illinois for the wonderful care of their mother.
