Richard Kasten, 75, of Brownstown died at 5:52pm Sunday, May 13, 2012 at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Gieseking-Claggett Funeral Home, Brownstown with John O’dell officiating.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be at Mt Carmel Cemetery, rural Brownstown with military rites provided by Brownstown V.F.W. Richard was born on May 26, 1936 in Carlinville, IL, the son of the late Irving and Cora (Perrottet) Kasten. He married Elizabeth (Behrends) Kasten on August 4, 1963 in Brownstown, IL.
He attended Blackburn College in Carlinville and Southern Illinois University in Carbondale majoring in agriculture. He served 6 years in the Illinois National Guard. Richard farmed and worked for Illinois PCA in Carlinville and Edwardsville for 20 years. He also worked for Bergmann Taylor of St. Jacob, IL for 10 years. He lived in Edwardsville for 34 years before retiring to his country home in the woods near Brownstown. He enjoyed fixing anything, spending time on his farm, riding on his four-wheeler or the zero turn mower, gardening, and thinking of his beloved family. Richard was an active member of the Mt. Carmel Methodist Church.
He leaves his cherished and loving wife of 48 years, Elizabeth. He was proud of his two children, Cynthia (Bob) Blair of Geneva, IL, Gregory (Angelina) Kasten of Fayetteville, GA, and especially cherished his four grandchildren, Mary Beth and Rebecca Blair of Geneva and Stone and Reid Kasten of Fayetteville. He is also survived by his brother, Carroll (Elaine) Kasten of Mesa, AZ, sister, Ellen (Jim) Chase of Athens, IL, sisters- and brothers-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dean, Don and Raymond and a sister in infancy.
