Scottie Eldon Ooton, 95, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at Mill Creek Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Springfield.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 10 at the First Christian Church in Effingham. Burial will be in Old Union Cemetery in rural Hord, with military rites. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday prior to the services at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or the Old Union Cemetery Fund.

Eldon was born on December 4, 1922, in Hord, IL, the son of Heber and Ruby (Basford) Ooton. He was united in marriage to Berniece Eytchison on May 30, 1943, at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where he was stationed in the U.S. Army. She preceded him in death on April 23, 2008. Eldon served his country in the U.S. Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the service, Eldon owned a barbershop and later sold real estate. He enjoyed running his beagles and doing genealogy. Over the years, Eldon published several books. Eldon enjoyed making tie quilts which he sewed the ties onto a sheet and then had them custom quilted. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Effingham, Heart Shrine Club, Masonic Lodge, Effingham County Sportsman Club, VFW, American Legion, 84th Infantry Division Society, and Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

Eldon is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Joseph) Dobson of Alexandria, VA and Karen (John) Berman of Springfield; son, James Ooton of Sarasota, FL; grandchildren, Dr. Joseph (Dr. Roberta) Dobson III of Virginia Beach, VA, Dennis (Melinda) Dobson of Dumfries, VA, Scott (Jessica) Dobson of Alexandria, VA, Aimee (Eric) Mayland of Springfield, and Jason (Anne Marie) Berman of Bronx, NY, Kellie (Chedo) Vugrincic of Austin, TX, Jennifer Bernstein of Pasadena, CA; great-grandchildren, Cooper and Kendal Dobson, Annette Dobson, Adam and Noah Mayland, and Nico Vugrincic.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Berniece; brother, Jack Ooton, and grandson-in-law, Erik Bernstein.
