Duane Guffey, 62, of Altamont, passed away Thursday evening, February 15, 2018 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 23, 2018 at Christ’s Church in Effingham with burial in Welch Cemetery, rural Ramsey. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the church. Memorials may take the form of donations to the wishes of his family.

Duane was born November 27, 1955 in Effingham, the son of Laurel and Marjorie (Welch) Guffey. He married Marcia File on May 30, 1975. Duane began his public service as a part-time firefighter/EMT with the Effingham Fire Department nearly 40 years ago. He went on to serve as a part-time Effingham Police Officer for over 30 years and as chief deputy coroner for more than a decade and was currently serving a second term as Effingham County Coroner. One of his greatest joys, was serving people through public service and at the family business, Guffey Cleaners, and the relationships he made in this community.

Duane was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, shooting, and golfing. He spent many years bowling in league play and has actively served in various ministries within the church.

Duane’s family was very important to him and he enjoyed the time they were able to spend together. He is survived by his wife, Marcia of Altamont; sons, Chris (Kellie) of Sedalia, MO and Justin (Kara) of Pierce City, MO; grandchildren, Kyla, Judah, Eliza, Ezra, Isaiah, Zariah, and his newest addition, Georgia Hadlee; sister, Patti (Paul) Chwasczinski of Ashley and brother-in-law, Jerry Seibert of Springfield.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Cheryl Seibert and grandchildren, Isabella and Jonathan.
