Ronald Eugene Onstott, age 82, of Newton, formerly of Iola, Illinois passed away at 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at his home, surrounded by family.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17 at Pagel Funeral Home in Edgewood, Illinois. There will be a thirty-minute viewing prior to the service. Mike Durre will be officiating. Burial will be at Iola Cemetery, with military rites observed. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Pagel Funeral Home in Edgewood, Illinois. Memorials may go to Land of Lincoln Honor Flight or the donor’s choice.

Ronald was born on September 27, 1935 in Iola, Illinois, the son of Hollis and Vera (Jenkins) Onstott. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He then returned to his beloved home in Clay County and married Betty Ingram on June 10, 1961 in Effingham, Illinois. He worked at the Iola Stone Quarry for over 10 years until pursuing his love of truck driving. He drove a semi-truck until his retirement in 1998. He was a member of the American Legion Post #914 and the Iola Baptist Church. He enjoyed working and pulling horses in his free time. He pulled ponies in the late 60s and early 70s. Upon retirement, he began pulling draft horses. He traveled all over the Midwest for horse pulls and has won numerous awards, including 1st place at the Illinois State Fair.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Onstott of Newton, Illinois; three daughters, Lori McGrady (Tim) of Hillsboro, Indiana, Lisa Yaw (David) of Newton, Illinois, Julie Jackson (Cory) of Newton, Illinois; seven grandchildren, Baily Beasley (Sam), Audrey and Clayton McGrady, Dylan and Taylor Johnson, Shelby (fiancé Shelton Biggs) and Cole Jackson, one great-grandchild, Lilly Johnson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis and Vera Onstott; two sisters, Connie Tolliver and Cheryl Griffith and nephew, Tyler Tolliver.
