Ronald D. Ashley, 81, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2018, at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 5 at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Entombment will be in Arborcrest Memorial Park in Effingham, with military rites. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Ronald was born on July 24, 1936, in Effingham, IL, the son of William J. and Mabel (Haney) Ashley. He was united in marriage to Shirley Hiatt and to this union were four children: Peggy, Glenn, Michael, and Marla. She preceded him in death on October 21, 1986. Ron later spent over 16 years with his companion, Betty Vail.

Ronald served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1957. He retired from World Color Press after 28 years. Ronald enjoyed daily walks through Effingham, fishing, and tennis. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He loved his family and friends. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Effingham, Effingham American Legion Post 120, and Effingham Moose Lodge.

Ronald is survived by his companion, Betty Vail of Effingham; children, Peggy (Kenny) Funneman of Effingham, Michael Ashley of Effingham, and Marla (John) Ruff of Jewett; Betty’s children: Mike (Kathy) Brasel, Larissa Brown, Michaela (David) Verdeyen, and John (Shirley) Loggins; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; brothers, Larry (Virginia) Ashley of Edinburgh, IN; sisters, Joyce Shull of Burlington, NC and Ann Hess of Easley, SC.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter in infancy, Anita; son, Glenn Ashley; Betty’s son, Tom Brasel; sisters, Shirley Fowler and Jean Franklin; and brothers, William Ashley and Terry Ashley.
