Max Short age 80 of Newton passed away at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at his home.

Funeral services celebrating Max’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 23 at the Central Christian Church with Bro. Mike Knepper officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday in the church. Burial will be in the Chapel Cemetery, Newton, Illinois. Memorial gifts in honor of Max may be made to the Eagle for Life Endowment Fund.

Max was born on May 11, 1937 in Richland County, Illinois the son of Lloyd L. “Jack” Short and Pauline Newkirk Short Foster. Max was a graduate of Newton High School Class of 1955 and served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves. On May 25, 1958, Max married Clara Bunton at the Falmouth Church of Christ. For over fifty years, Max owned, operated and was an employee of  McClane Motor Sales in Newton. He was a member of the Central Christian Church in Newton. In his free time, Max enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a devoted Newton Eagles’ sports fan and followed car racing, especially enjoying open-wheel modified racing.

Max will be loved and remembered by his wife of fifty-nine years Clara Short of Newton; sons Jeff (Julie) Short, Todd Short, and Kevin (Amy) Short all of Newton; three grandchildren Emily (Steven) Benefiel of Newton, Lucas Matson of Newton, and Ellie Short of Georgetown; three great-grandchildren Henry Will, Holden Benefiel, and Anistyn Benefiel all of Newton; and sister-in-law Lora Short of Newton.

His parents, grandchild Kyra Sidwell, brother Larry D. Short and two infant brothers preceded him in death.
