Russell “Lane” Helton, 80, of Shelbyville, passed away at 7:33 p.m. on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital in Shelbyville surrounded by his loving family.

Lane was born July 17, 1937, in Shelby County, the son of Carl and Cleta Helton.  His mother later married Jim Hill who went on to raise him.  Lane married Mary Helton on April 28, 1962 in Shelbyville.

Lane retired from AE Staley after nearly 40 years.  He then spent several years sealing driveways and painting for many people which he truly enjoyed.  He was a family oriented man who would do anything for the ones he loved.  He never knew a stranger and was good for a story that would make you laugh.  You could find his iconic red truck at many Shelbyville sporting events through the years.  He spent 45 years on the chain gang for Shelbyville High School football, making many great memories.  His grandchildren were the love of his life and he was their greatest fan.  They couldn’t have asked for a better Pape!

Surviving are his children:  Beth (Rick) Duckett and Patrick (Tracie) Helton; grandchildren:  Katelyn, Lucas and Sydnie; sister-in-law, Pat Eversole and his favorite dog, Sassy.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Helton; parents:  Carl and Cleta Helton and Jim Hill; sisters:  Joan and Betty.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Lockart-Green Funeral Home in Shelbyville.  Private interment will be at a later time.  Memorials may be made to the Shelbyville Booster Club.
