Mary L. Swingler, 88, of Effingham passed away Thursday evening, October 19, 2017 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 23 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the church with a 6:30 p.m. Ladies Rosary. Memorial donations may be given to St. Anthony Schools.

Mary was born August 8, 1929 in Effingham, the daughter of Aloysius and Johanna (Renschen) Wendt. She married Robert L. "Bob" Swingler on May 24, 1952 and he preceded her in death in 2009. Mary was a homemaker and a wonderful seamstress. She was a long time member of St. Anthony Church in Effingham, the St. Anthony Council of Catholic Women and enjoyed playing cards with her friends. Mary was a former member of the Effingham Country Club, as well as the Little Wabash Camping Club.

Mary is survived by her children, Valerie (Ken) Wohltman, Stephen (Cathy), both of Effingham, Barb (Doug) Mitchell of St. Charles, Mo., Dave (Audrey), Carolyn (Brad) Rohlfing and Shelly (Mike) Martelli, all of Effingham; 17 grandchildren, Sonya (Kirk) Reis, Kelly (Steve) Bales, Gina (Anthony) Imburgia, Doug (Heidi) Wohltman, Christy (Tony) Hakman, Brian (Erin) Swingler, Carrie (Kevin) Schultz, Megan (Matt) Dunkmann, Erin Mitchell, Alicia Swingler (fiance, Eric), Lauren (Ashlee) Mapes, Derek Rohlfing, Miranda Rohlfing (fiance, Spencer), and Patrick, Chandler, Nicholas and Michael Martelli; 22 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; brother, Al (Millie) Wendt of Effingham; sisters, Connie Wendt of Effingham, Audrey Walk of Sigel and Verena Allen of Effingham; sister-in-law, Pat Wendt of Effingham.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob and brothers, Virgil and Bernie Wendt.
