Esther Leppin Bernahl, 95, of Altamont passed away on Saturday, October 7, 2017.

Funeral Services will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Altamont, on Saturday, October 14 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Daniel K. Hudson and Rev. Bernard M. Ross officiating. Visitation from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. immediately prior to the funeral service. Internment alongside her husband Elwin in the church cemetery following the service. Gieseking Funeral Home in Altamont is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Esther Leppin was born Wednesday, November 23, 1921 to Otto and Edna Durheim Leppin in St. Peter, Illinois. She married Elwin P. Bernahl on January 27, 1946 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Esther was a homemaker, a life-long member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Ladies Aid, and an active participant at the Braille Center in Effingham. She, along with her husband, was a longtime member of the local Square Dance and Ballroom Dancing clubs. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, and often with her family, and hosting and attending Pinochle parties with friends. She especially enjoyed quilting, and pieced together many quilts and comforters as gifts to her family over the years. In 2006 they said goodbye to their beloved house in the country, and continued their retirement life together in their house in town. They would remain married for 66 years until his death in 2012.

She is the mother of three children: Linda Dahlheimer (husband Charles), Jeanne Wolff (husband Dale), and Robert Bernahl (wife Cynthia Hulsizer). She is the grandmother of six:  Heidi Wolff (Kim) Isenhart, Anneke Wolff (Dan) Hudson, Michael (Seema) Dahlheimer, Kirsten Wolff (Ryan) Osteen, and Aaron (Stephanie) Wolff. Alegra Sarai Wolff preceded her in death during infancy. She is the great-grandmother of thirteen: Olivia & Luke Isenhart, Lydia, Ezekiel, Liam & Noelle Hudson, Alexander and Nicholas Dahlheimer, Elise and Atticus Osteen and Wyatt, August and Ezra Wolff.

Along with her granddaughter, her husband and parents preceded her in death.
