Bernard J. Schallert Sr., 87, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2017, at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 19 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday with a 6:30 p.m. Effingham Knights of Columbus #665 Rosary and Fourth Degree Rites at Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. Memorials may be made to Sacred Heart School.

Bernard was born on May 20, 1930, at home in Portageville, MO, the son of John Gabriel and Clara Belle (Gain) Schallert. He married Rosanna Boos on January 23, 1951, in Cape Girardeau, MO. Bernard served in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was the founder of Schallert’s Sewing Center in Effingham. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He was committed to his family and loved to travel.

He is survived by his wife, Rosanna Schallert; their five children: Sue Ann Whitlock, Anthony Schallert, Steven (Kathy) Schallert, Bernard “Benny” Schallert Jr., and Katie (James) Hetrick; one brother, Francis (Eva) Schallert; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and five siblings.
