Gary Henry “Dutch” Schoenhoff, 84 of Effingham, passed away at 9:50 a.m. Friday, June 23, 2017 at Lakeland Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Effingham.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham, with a 6:30 p.m. parish wake service. Memorial donations may be made to the donor’s choice.

Gary was born September 8, 1932 in Effingham, the son of Albert and Helen (Bergfeld) Schoenhoff. He enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard in 1949. Gary was then mobilized to Camp Cooke, California and later deployed and assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, where he served in Korea from October 1952 to May 1953. He was separated from active service in October of 1953. Gary then married Dolores L. Vogel on January 28, 1956. Gary worked in construction for many years and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham.

Gary enjoyed spending time with his family, which includes his wife, Dolores of Effingham; three sons, Gary (Vickie) of Effingham, Larry (Rita) of Effingham and Gerald (Deborah) of Brownstown; two daughters, Catherine Rosin of San Antonio, TX and Carolyn (Rick) Pennington of Germantown; brother, Jack of Hord and sister, Maxine Dixon of Effingham; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Naomi Funneman.
