Harold Dwane Hartman, 90, of Shumway, Illinois passed away Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 26 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effingham, with Rev. Earl Brown officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Strasburg, with military rites. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, Effingham and from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Altamont Lutheran Interparish School in Altamont, Trinity Lutheran School in Stewardson, or donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left by clicking here.

Harold was born December 10, 1926, to Edward J. and Lydia (Rincker) Hartman in rural Stewardson. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg. He served his country in the United States Army from 1945-46 in Japan and the Philippines. After his discharge he went to drafting school in Chicago and worked as a draftsman in Mattoon and Effingham. Harold married Rhea Miller October 14, 1951 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Island Grove, Wheeler.  The couple moved to their farm in 1953 and together they farmed and raised their family of Ann, Lee, and Ray. Harold was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Effingham, Effingham County Farm Bureau, Stewardson American Legion Post 611, and the Effingham VFW Post 1769.

Harold leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Rhea; daughter, Ann (husband Mark) Musser of Beecher City, sons, Lee (wife Karen) Hartman and Ray (wife Eileen) Hartman both of Shumway; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, sister, Vera Schmitt of Strasburg; and brother, Dwane (wife Maude) Hartman of Stewardson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ervin Hartman.
