Leona Gabel, 92, of Greenup, Illinois passed away at 5:15 pm on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Mattoon Rehab and Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm on Sunday, May 14 at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until the service time. Burial will be in the Harmony Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Zion (Block) Church, 153 Co. Rd. 1900 E, Greenup, IL 62428 or the Oblong Children’s Christian Home, 4094 E 1050th Ave, Oblong, IL 62449.

Leona was born on October 30, 1924 in rural Cumberland County, the daughter of Luther “Ferd” and Grace (Cutright) Stewart. She married Lawrence M. Gabel Jr. on October 16, 1943. He preceded her in death in 2008.
Surviving are sons Don (Paula) Gabel of Greenup and Larry (Marilyn) Gabel of Westerville, OH; sister Wanda Lee Brown of Greenup; four grandchildren [Todd (Leah), Jill (Mick Shimp), Brian (Jennifer), Brad (Robin)], and seven great grandchildren (Grant, Miriah, Quinn, Braden, Tanner, Noah, Brandon).
Leona was primarily a homemaker. She especially enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and sewing. She loved spending time with family, especially the grandkids and great grandkids. Over the years, she worked at Ettelbrick Shoe Factory. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Block Church.
