Velma M. Jones, 97, of Effingham, IL, passed away Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Effingham.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 9 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, Effingham, IL. Memorials may be made in loving memory of Velma to St. Anthony Schools.

Velma was born on June 24, 1919, in Mason, IL, the daughter of Harry and Cora (Bushue) Hooker. She married Robert J. Jones on April 23, 1942, in Buffalo, NY, and he preceded her in death on February 24, 2008. Velma was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. She liked gardening with her flowers, and was known for making the best applesauce. Velma especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and also walking her dog, “Bear.” 

Velma is survived by her sons, Dale W. (Kim Ullrich) Jones of Watson and Gary (Rhonda) Jones of Bradenton, FL; grandchildren, Adam, Jill, Cheryl, Pam, Randy, Lori, and Jennifer; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; son, Duane Jones; daughter, Linda Lofton; grandson, Jason Jones; brother, Paul Hooker; sisters, Ann Leary, Marie Poynter, Gertrude Zenker, Angela Koester, Lorraine Brewer, Bernadine Brady, and a sister in infancy, Ruth Hooker.
