Helen E. Einhorn Martin, 97, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Friday, March 10, 2017 at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham with all of her children by her side.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 16 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. C.C.W. rosary at Johnson Funeral Home, 1110 N. Fourth Street, Effingham, IL. Memorials may be made in loving memory of Helen to St. Anthony Schools or Catholic Charities.

Helen was born on December 18, 1919 in Shelby County, IL, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hoene) Schumacher. She married Leonard F. “Bud” Einhorn on August 28, 1941, and he preceded her in death on September 16, 1966. She later married Leo J. “Lee” Martin on November 21, 1980, and he preceded her in death on September 9, 2011. Helen was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, the Altar Sodality, and the Council of Catholic Women. She created a wonderful home for her family and made her home a welcoming place for relatives and friends. She and Len stressed the importance of faith and education to their children. They were firm supporters of St. Anthony Schools. Helen enjoyed playing the harmonica. She was always up for a good game of pinochle with her family and friends. Also, she was known for her cooking especially her homemade fried chicken and apple pie. She enjoyed her sports and rooted for the St. Anthony Bulldogs, the Illini, and the St. Louis Cardinals. In life, Helen was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.    

Helen is survived by her children, James J. (Debbie) Einhorn, Norma J. (Robert) Fisher, Robert G. (Ruth) Einhorn M.D., and Thomas L. (Myra) Einhorn, all of Effingham; step-children, Jerry (Linda) Martin of Lakeland, FL, Bill (Theresa) Martin of Tampa, FL, Tom (Veanie) Martin of Mahomet, and Mike (Mary) Martin of Champaign; grandchildren, Bryron (Adrienne) Einhorn, Rob (Tammie) Fisher, Jay (Angie) Fisher, Lisa (Matt) Murfee, Michael (Rebecca) Einhorn D.M.D., Jennifer (Jeremy) Brown O.D., Joe Einhorn M.D., Sarah (Jarod) Wendt, and Daniel (Sarah) Einhorn; 14 great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Sheri (Joe) Kozlar, Debbie Martin, Kim Martin, Natalie (Joe) DiMisa, Marci (Michael) Marincic, Angee (Kelly) Foster, Julie (John) Odum, Jeff (Allison) Martin, and Ryan (Lisa) Martin; 19 step-great-grandchildren; and 1 step-great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Leonard and Leo; sisters, Bertha Schutte, Rita Thompson, and Pauline Brummer; and brothers, Vincent Schumacher, Norbert Schumacher, Leonard Schumacher (twin), and Albert Schumacher.
