Kaye Eugene Smith, age 87, formerly of St. Elmo, Illinois passed away at 5:40 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2017 at the Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 8 at C&A Pagel Funeral Home in St. Elmo, Illinois. PeeWee Denton will be officiating. Burial will be at Maplewood Cemetery in St. Elmo, Illinois. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may go to St. Elmo Education Association or donor’s choice.

Kaye was born on September 27, 1929 in Shobonier, Illinois, the son of Fred and Laura (Ledbetter) Smith. He married Patsy Ann Rhodes on November 24, 1955 in St. Elmo, Illinois. He was a member of the St. Elmo Lion’s Club, St. Elmo American Legion and First United Methodist Church in St. Elmo, Illinois. He was a former City Council member, Chief of Police in St. Elmo, Illinois and Fayette County Sheriff Deputy. He was also one of the original volunteers for the St. Elmo Fire Department for many years. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Patti Hampsten (husband Randy) of Greenup, Illinois; sister, Betty Brubaker of Olathe, Kansas and one grandchild, Sara Hampsten of Greenup, Illinois.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Laura Smith; wife, Patsy Ann Smith; two sisters, Delores Gillespie and Mary Olsen.
