Donald Louis Vogel, 86, of Strasburg, Illinois, died at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, December 28, 2016 in Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 2 in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Strasburg with Rev. Steven Becker officiating.  Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Monday in the church.  Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Strasburg,  with military rites by the Strasburg American Legion Post #289. Arrangements are by Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Strasburg.  Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, St. Paul’s Cemetery Fund or the Stewardson-Strasburg Education Foundation Endowment Fund. Don was born June 16, 1930 in Strasburg, the son of Martin and Nora (Figge) Vogel.  He graduated from Strasburg High School in the Class of 1947.  Don then served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War and specialized in radar maintenance.  He farmed in the Strasburg area until his retirement.  Don was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and Strasburg American Legion Post #289. He married Betty E. Frede September 14, 1951 and they recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.  

He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, James “Jay” (wife Kathy) Vogel of Strasburg; daughters, Janet Vogel of St. Louis, Mo. and Jill (Mary Sweeney) Vogel of St. Louis, Mo.; sisters-in-law, Virginia Vogel of Neoga and Beverly (husband Frede) Schnapp of Mattoon; three grandchildren, Kelly (husband Erich) Buckwalter, Daniel Vogel and Kimberly Vogel and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Samuel Buckwalter.

He was preceded in death by his father, Martin in 1972, mother, Nora in 1944 and brother, Dale in 2013.
