Elgie Lee Murphy, age 76, of Effingham, Illinois and formerly of Fair Oaks, Indiana, passed away Sunday, September 25, 2016, at HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. Elgie most recently lived at the Lutheran Care Center in Altamont, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30am Saturday, October 1 at Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer, Indiana with burial in Memory Gardens of Rensselaer. Visitation will be from 3-7pm Friday. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Care Center, c/o Landscaping & Garden Fund, 702 W. Cumberland Road, Altamont, IL 62411.

She was born in Rensselaer, Indiana on September 19, 1940, the daughter of Lawrence and Gladie Mae (Salyers) Prater. On December 20, 1958, in Cedar Lake, Indiana, Elgie married George Ralph Murphy. Elgie worked more than 30 years for the Kankakee Valley School Corporation as a cook at the DeMotte Elementary School in DeMotte, Indiana. She also was a sales clerk for two years at Kohl’s Department Store in Effingham. While residing in Indiana, Elgie attended Grace Fellowship Christian Church in DeMotte. She enjoyed volunteering with the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary, was an avid reader and enjoyed doing needlepoint.

She is survived by her loving children, daughter Audrey (Dave) Swingler of Effingham, Illinois and Mark (Rebecca) Murphy of Bradenton, Florida; three grandchildren, Brandy (Michael) Bartman, Alicia Swingler and Lauren (Ashlee) Mapes and three great-grandchildren, Paige Bright, Issabella Bartman and Noah Bartman; and her siblings, Jessie (Dennis) Day of Sandoval, IL., Yuvonne (Pat) Vravel, Ann (Jim) Johnson, Edgar (Penny) Prater and Gail Melton, all of Indiana.

Elgie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, one brother Lawrence Prater, Jr., and three sisters, Callie Polland, Mary Scammerhorn, and Lilly Jenkins.
