Ambrose R. “Shorty” Doedtman, 79 of Effingham, passed away at 9:29 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 25 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham with a 6:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary followed by 4th degree rites. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Ambrose was born February 16, 1936 in Effingham County, the son of Andrew and Rose (Hagen) Doedtman. He married Mary Ellen Cox on November 22, 1962 and she survives. Ambrose served with the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Effingham, American Legion Post #120 and was an Effingham Knights of Columbus 4th degree member. Ambrose was a St. Louis Cardinal fan and enjoyed “piddling” around the garage and gardening. He was employed with Fedders Corporation for 39 years and most recently was working for Koerner Distributing. Ambrose never knew a stranger and will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Ambrose is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen of Effingham; daughter, Deb (Rob) Plummer of Effingham; sister, Eileen Doedtman of Effingham; sister-in-law, Norma Doedtman of Effingham; grandson, Brett Funneman and two step-grandchildren, Jordan and Kendall Plummer.

Ambrose was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ray; sister, Luella (Bernard) Schabbing and nephew, Donnie Schabbing.
