Philip R. Coats, 62, of Effingham, passed away at 4:55 a. m. Friday, May 23, 2014, at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis, MO.
 
A celebration of Phil's life will be held at 11 a. m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Effingham, with the Rev. Roger Marshall officiating.  Visitation will be from 9 a. m. to 11 a. m. Wednesday, prior to the services at the church. A private burial will be held in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Effingham, at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham.  Memorials may be made to Effingham Noon Rotary Scholarship Fund or donor's choice.

Philip was born on June 5, 1951, in Flora, IL, the son of Dallas Robert and Ruth (McCain) Coats. He married Melissa Niccum on April 24, 1979, in Effingham, IL, and she survives. Phil was a member of First Baptist Church in Effingham and Effingham Ministerial Association. He was a member of Effingham Noon Rotary, a Paul Harris Fellow and received the Effingham Noon Rotary Club's 2013 Vocational Excellence Award. He owned and operated Effingham Printing Company. He was also a church organ salesman. Phil loved his children, grandchildren, music, his many friendships and his church.
 
Phil is survived by his wife, Melissa; sons, Dallas (Kim) Coats of Paris, Philip (Kristin) Coats of Moore, OK, and Paul Coats of Effingham; grandchildren, Madeline, Kevin, Olivia, Gabe, Bekkah and Lance; and sisters, Janet (Bill) Burkhart and Marilyn Coats, both of Texas. 
 
He was preceded in death by his parents.
