Wanda Ballard (98) of Altamont

Wanda S. Ballard, 98, of Altamont, died at 11:45 p. m., Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00p. m., Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Lutheran Care Center Chapel, Altamont with Rev. Willie Deuel and Nick Robertson officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to service time. Burial will take place at a later date in North Grove Cemetery, Celina, OH. Memorials may be directed to Ballard Nature Center, First United Methodist Church, or Lutheran Care Center all of Altamont. Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Wanda was born on Monday, June 7, 1915 in Mercer County, Ohio to Harvey and Pearl (Haney) Shimp. She graduated from Neptune High School. She married George F. Carpenter and he preceded her in death in 1972. She then married Homer Robertson of Cowden, IL and moved to Illinois. Homer preceded her in death in 1986. She then married Ernest C. Ballard of Altamont, IL who died in 2003.

She retired from Norfolk and Western Railroad (formerly The Nickel Plate Road) serving 20 years as a cook for a communications crew, stationed between Cleveland and St. Louis/ Chicago and Buffalo. She was involved in the creation of Ballard Nature Center, Altamont, a 210-acre wildlife and nature preserve. Wanda was a member of Center Methodist Church before it closed and then transferred membership to St. Paul's Methodist Church, Celina, OH and there she taught the Wesleyan Sunday School Class for many years and after moving to Altamont was active with the First United Methodist Church. Wanda spent several years with her daughter in Arizona before returning to Altamont and becoming a resident of Luther Terrace, Altamont and eventually becoming a resident at Lutheran Care Center, Altamont.

Wanda is survived by her sons; Tom Q. Carpenter of Bokeelia, FL and Dick M. (Carole Lawrence) Carpenter of Sun Lakes, AZ, her daughter, Rebecca (Ray L.) Adams of Tempe, AZ. She is also survived by; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren and a number of stepchildren, stepgrandchildren and step great grandchildren and a sister, Marilyn Craft of St. Mary's OH. 

She was preceded in death by; parents, son, Jerry B. Carpenter and his wife Joy Lee Clark, Alburn, IN, brothers; Nathan B. Shimp, Palmyra, IL, Charles T. Shimp, St. Mary's OH, sisters; Stella Wolfe, Rockford, OH, Bernice Cone, Unionville, OH, Zola Simmons, Columbus, OH, Edna Phyllis Simpson, St. Mary's, OH, Celia Beougher, Celina, OH and Rita Groters, Centerville, PA.
