Donald P. Eden, 85, of Effingham, passed away at 6:10 p. m. Thursday, March 13, 2014, at The Glenwood in Effingham, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. Monday, March 17, 2014, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Effingham, with the Rev. Earl Brown officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p. m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Effingham, with military rites.

Donald was born on July 9, 1928, in Effingham, the son of George M. and Adeline M. (Althoff) Eden. He married Frances Irene Baumann on October 14, 1972, at St. Anthony's Hospital Chapel in Effingham. Don was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army, serving as an Honor Guard for General MacArthur. Don was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Effingham; Effingham American Legion; Past Exalted Ruler of Effingham Elks Lodge 1016 (twice); President of Kiwanis in Effingham; City Commissioner for Effingham; served two terms on the Effingham County Board; and served on St. Anthony Hospital Board of Directors. He started as a projectionist for the Heart Theatre; worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad as a brakeman; was instrumental in starting Effingham Regrinding; and as a Politician was involved in community affairs keeping the public informed of governing tax inequalities.

Don is survived by his wife of 42 years, Frances; son, Mark Eden of Charleston and fiancée, Faye Miller; step-son, Roy Wendling and wife, Pat of Algonquin, granddaughters, Brittany, Rachel, Teri, and Jana: 7 great-grandchildren; brothers, Tom Eden of Effingham, Jim Eden and wife, Barb of Gainesville, GA, and Dan Eden and wife, Louise of Franklin, TN; and sister, Ruth Stice and husband, Jim of Sycamore.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
